Test: The iPhone 11 can survive a 12m underwater dive

The latest iPhone models, much like many flagships today, are technically water resistant. Both the iPhone 11 and the Pro models are given IP68 ratings, which means that they can be submerged in 2 metres of water for 30 minutes. But Apple says that the iPhone Pro and Pro Max models, despite also having the same IP68 rating, can survive in 4 metres of water for 30 minutes.

But specs on paper are just that: promised performance that may fail, fulfil, or even exceed expectations in real-world situations. CNET recently conducted a pretty hardcore water test with the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro, where they mounted the iPhones on an underwater drone to see how deep they could take the phones.

The first dive, at a depth of 4 metres for 30 minutes, proved Apple’s claim that the Pro model could withstand that depth without any damage. However, even the iPhone 11 wasn’t damaged by the dive, although the speakers on the cheaper iPhone sounded a little more waterlogged than the Pro.

The next two dives—at 8 metres and 12 metres—resulted in similar findings. For 30 minutes, both iPhones were submerged, with the only apparent effect being the speakers sounding softer than usual. The screens were fine, cameras weren’t fogged, microphones worked, and everything was more or less fine—other than the speakers sounding a little more muffled than normal.

72 hours later, the report states that the only issue that the dive had left on the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro was a slightly softer and less-crisp sound from the speakers when compared to brand new iPhones.

However, it’s worth noting that at a depth of 12 metres—three times of what the iPhone 11 Pro is rated for, and six times of what the iPhone 11 is rated for—the iPhones came out more or less unscathed. Remember, this isn’t a scientific test, or anything of the sort. But if anything, this shows that the iPhone 11 models can certainly take a splash or two.
