Vivo V17 Pro Malaysia: Everything you need to know

The Vivo V17 Pro has just been launched in Malaysia, with the successor to the popular Vivo V15 Pro coming with certain upgraded specs and an interesting new camera setup. That includes a pretty unique dual selfie pop-up camera, along with a vertical quad camera setup at the rear.

At a price of just below RM1,700, the V17 Pro is certainly an interesting proposition for users who regularly take selfies, and adds yet another option for buyers in the increasingly competitive mid-range market.

Pricing and availability

The V17 Pro is available in a single variant: 128GB of storage and 8GB of RAM, and is officially priced in Malaysia as follows:

Vivo V17 Pro—8GB RAM, 128GB storage—RM1,699

If you’re looking to pick one up, Vivo’s latest smartphone is now available for pre-order on the Vivo Flagship Store on Lazada and the Vivo Store on Shopee—with colour options of Knight Black and Crystal White. Pre-order customers are also entitled to “Mystery Gifts worth RM318” on the aforementioned platforms.

Vivo V17 Pro Specs

The V17 Pro is powered by the capable mid-range Snapdragon 675, which is mated to 8GB of RAM. It also features a Super AMOLED 6.44″ display, with a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels. Unfortunately, there isn’t an option to expand the 128GB of onboard storage via microSD.

You get a large 4,100mAh battery sustaining the device, and Vivo has finally switched from the microUSB port (on the Vivo V15 Pro) to a USB-C port on the V17 Pro—a first for a Vivo V-series device. In addition to that, 18W fast-charging is supported, with a fast-charger available out of box. The V17 Pro thankfully retains the headphone jack, as well.

It’s in the camera department where the V17 Pro shines, with a 48MP main shooter supported by an 8MP ultra wide-angle camera, a 2MP macro lens, and a 2MP depth sensor for those bokeh-ish shots. In an unorthodox dual pop-up module, you get 2 front-facing cameras: a 32MP selfie camera and an 8MP ultra wide-shooter as well—which will definitely come in handy for those group selfie shots.

The V17 Pro, in hand, does feel rather solid. This lends itself to a more premium feel, although it is a pretty hefty device. It features a glass back, which can be a fingerprint magnet, while the sides of the device appear to be made from aluminium.

Vivo calls the display of the V17 Pro an Ultra FullView display, which basically means that it’s unobscured by a notch, thanks to the pop-up cameras. In addition to that, the bezels are decently thin, while it also features an in-display fingerprint scanner.

However, at a price of RM1,699, the V17 Pro is being pit against devices like the Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro and the Huawei Nova 5T, which both have superior flagship class processors. Overall, the V17 Pro looks like an interesting offering in the mid-range, although it lacks the same power under the hood as other similarly priced smartphones.
