Is this a cinema or a hotel?

Wait, wait hol’ up a minute. I get it, people like to be comfortable when they’re watching a movie, but you’d think a simple super plush chair would suffice. So why on Earth does it look like local film exhibitor Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) is putting a set of twin beds in their theatre hall?

In a Facebook post, GSC introduced their brand new Aurum Theatre, which is an “ultra-luxe boutique cinema” that will be coming to The Gardens Mall, KL and Mid Valley Southkey in JB. For this cinema, GSC also worked with bedding company Getha to build Malaysia’s “first-ever luxury cinema suites” called the Getha Lux Suites.

That, I suppose is the one we’re looking at right now in these photos with the twin beds, side tables, blankets, pillows and Getha branding. Oh, and did I mention that there’s also a wireless charger, cup-holders and a remote control that does wondrous things (I’ve reached out to GSC to get more information on this and will update this post when/if I hear back from them)?

I don’t know about you, but for the most part, what decides if I’ve had a good movie-going experience is usually down to:
1. The people I watch with
2. The movie itself (and whether or not there’s an issue with the display)
3. How noisy the little children are
4. Whether or not there are people kicking my chair and/or talking on their phone during the screening.

The actual chairs I’m sitting on don’t often factor into my experience that much. Sure, a nice chair is appreciated, but these days most theatre chairs I’ve sat on have been decent enough. I’ve never once thought: “y’know what I really want? I want to be lying in a bed while watching this movie”, because if I did, I’d just do that at home. PJs optional.

But yes, while it looks absolutely ridiculous, I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t want to at least give it a try. Y’know, just to see for myself how the other half watches movies in the cinema. That being said, I do have some concerns (because, of course I do).

Hygiene, I think is something that’s pretty obvious. It’s hard enough for these cinemas to keep their regular chairs clean, I’d be lying if I said that I wasn’t at least a little bit concerned with them trying to do the same with an actual bed. There’s one more concern too, but I think that’s a little too NSFW to be discussed here.

In any case, the Getha Lux Suites aren’t the only thing GSC’s new Aurum Theatre (btdubs, Aurum is Latin for Gold because nothing makes something more posh than Google Translating it into a dead language) has to offer. GSC also states that the Aurum Theatres will feature “other ultra-luxe halls” with “private cabins and thematic theatres”. These halls and theatres will also come with a “standalone gastrobar” that GSC says will “give movie-goers a place to feast and while the time away before their movie”.

That, to a commoner like me, is fascinating. Personally, I find a lot of joy in munching on food while watching a movie. Especially when its unhealthy fast-food, because watching the movie helps me take my mind off of the garbage that I’m putting into my body. But hey, I could get down and dirty with a gastrobar too–that is, of course, if they do that food better than they do their nuggets because GSC, your nuggets are terrible.

At this point, I think I should stop talking and just end the post here before GSC sees this and bans me from their cinemas. There is also no further information on the Aurum Theatre to be shared because GSC says that they’ll drop more details in the coming days. Either way, I’m psyched even though I’ll probably never fork out the money to watch a big-on-budget, small-on-plot blockbuster hit with too much CGI in the Getha Lux Suite.

Still, I’d love to hear your thoughts though, what do you guys think of this? Let me know in the comments below.
