Motorola’s new Android One smartphone has a GoPro-like camera

Motorola has expanded its Android One lineup with its new Motorola One Action. Motorola claims it’s the industry’s first to offer an ultra-wide action camera in a smartphone.

Upfront, the device gets a 6.3″ IPS display that pushes a Full HD+ (2520×1080) resolution in a cinematic 21:9 aspect ratio. Under the hood, it runs on a 10nm Samsung Exynos 9609 octa-core processor that comes with 4GB of RAM and it has 128GB of storage. If you need more, you can expand storage further via a microSD card up to 512GB.

The main highlight is its triple-camera setup at the rear. For normal photography, it has a 12MP f/1.8 main camera and a 5MP depth sensor. The main camera can be used to shoot videos up to 4K resolution.

If you need to take action footages, the Motorola One Action has a dedicated action camera thas has a quad-pixel technology. What’s interesting is that you can record footages horizontally while holding the smartphone in portrait mode. There’s also enhanced video stabilisation for a super smooth capture.

Motorola didn’t provide the pixel count for the ultra-wide action camera but according to Android Central, it is a 16MP unit that has a 117-degree field of view. The camera can combine four nearby pixels to create a larger 2-micron pixel size for better low light performance. Do note that the action camera has a maximum video resolution of Full HD (1920×1080).

For selfies, the device gets a 12MP f/2.0 front camera that can shoot videos in 4K.

Powering the device is a 3,500mAh battery and it supports 10W charging via USB-C. The device has a single firing speaker with Dolby Audio enhancement and it also comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Out of the box, it runs on Android 9 Pie and since this is an Android One device, it comes with two years of guaranteed software upgrades and three years of monthly security updates.

The Motorola One Action is going on sale in Brazil, Mexico and various European countries at €259 (about RM1,199). It will be released in other countries such as Latin America and Asia Pacific in the coming months. There are three colour options – Denim Blue, Pearl White and Aqua Teal.

In case you missed it, Motorola and Lenovo have resumed their smartphone business in Malaysia. They currently have an active online store on Shopee and Lazada.
