LG becomes first TV brand to support Apple HomeKit, along with AirPlay 2

Electronics manufacturer LG has just announced that its 2019 ThinkQ AI TVs will support Apple’s AirPlay 2 and HomeKit—a first for a global TV manufacturer with regards to the latter.

This means that users can now stream content from their Apple devices directly to their TVs, through the Apple TV app as well as videos. That said, Netflix recently announced that they are killing AirPlay support, so it’s worth remembering that.

LG also tells us that they are now adding support for HomeKit, which is Apple’s system for controlling your smart home devices. This means that users can now use the Home app on their Apple devices, or voice-activated Siri, to control smart home devices including their LG TVs. To do so, add your TV to the Home app on your device, and you’ll have access to TV functions such as volume and power, while you can also integrate your LG TV to scenes or automations with other HomeKit devices/accessories.

According to LG, Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit will be rolled out to owners of 2019 LG OLED TVs, NanoCell TVs, and UHD TVs with ThinQ AI capability via a firmware update this week in “more than 140 countries”.

However, we’ve reached out to LG for information regarding a Malaysian update, and it seems that the update will be first given to European and American markets, with an Asian release expected soon after. However, the date for a Malaysian update is yet to be confirmed.
