Xiaomi Mi A3 unboxing photos reveal an AMOLED display and new mid-range processor

It looks like the Xiaomi Mi A3 will be released sooner than expected as the folks at GSMArena have obtained photos of the retail box and its content. The Mi A3 is Xiaomi’s upcoming Android One smartphone that offers a pure Android experience instead of MIUI.

As seen above, it looks similar to the Xiaomi CC9 in China with a reflective curved glass back that comes with a triple camera setup. Initially, it is believed to be a rehashed version of the CC9 but turns out that it will be closer to the more affordable CC9e.

As seen above, the sticker label indicates that the device will come with a smaller 6.088″ AMOLED display that features a dew-drop notch. As a comparison, the CC9 features a larger 6.39″ Full HD+ AMOLED display. Since this is the standard (non-Lite) model, we reckon that it should be pushing a Full HD+ display like its previous Mi A series models. Also confirmed are an in-display fingerprint sensor and a large 4,030mAh battery.

Instead of running on a more powerful Snapdragon 730 processor, the label on the device reveals that it’s powered by a Snapdragon 665 unit as mentioned by leakster Roland Quandt. The Snapdragon 665 was first spotted on the Xiaomi CC9e and it appears to be an incremental update to the older Snapdragon 660 unit that’s powering the Mi A2.

According to the official spec-sheet, the Snapdragon 665 uses a similar 4x Kryo 260 Gold and 4x Kryo 260 Silver cores as the Snapdragon 660 but it runs at a lower 2.0GHz clock speed instead of 2.2GHz. However, the new chip is manufactured based on a more efficient 11nm process instead of 14nm. Of course, being a newer model, the Snapdragon 665 comes with an Adreno 610 GPU and an Spectra 165 ISP. Surprisingly, it only supports Quick Charge 3.0 instead of 4.0.

In the imaging department, the label has also confirmed a triple-camera setup that comes with a 48MP main camera along with an ultra-wide-angle lens. We reckon the third shooter will be used for depth effects like the current Xiaomi CC series.

As seen earlier, the Xiaomi Mi A3 will still retain a 3.5mm headphone jack, an infrared blaster as well as a USB-C port. Looking at the specs, the Mi A3 is definitely a notch below the current Mi 9T but this could also mean that the device is more affordable in price. Xiaomi is also expected to reveal a cheaper Mi A3 Lite alongside the Mi A3.

To refresh your memory, the Mi A2 with 4GB RAM + 64GB storage was priced at RM999, while the higher spec 6GB RAM + 128GB storage model was going for RM1,199 at the time of launch. The current Mi 9T is priced at RM1,199 for the base 6GB RAM + 64GB storage model and RM1,399 for the 128GB storage variant.

At the moment, Xiaomi is really going full swing with the Mi A3 and we won’t be surprised if they officially reveal the device in the next couple of days. If you haven’t seen it yet, you can check out the leaked renders here.
