Huawei revealed to us that the new EMUI 9.1 will be available on the 27th of June for the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, Mate 20, Mate 20 X, and Mate RS Porsche Design.
Among the new features you can expect are a new file system, GPU Turbo 3.0, and the much talked-about ‘Moon Mode’. In addition, users can now set videos as caller ringtones using self-made or 3rd party clips.
To get the update on your supported Huawei device, you’ll first need to make sure that your device is on the updated baseline version (head to Settings > System > Software update > Check For Updates):
| Huawei Mate 20 | HMA-L29C 9.0.0.270 |
| Huawei Mate 20 Pro | LYA-L29C 9.0.0.267 |
| Huawei Mate 20 X | EVR-L29B 9.0.0.207 |
| Huawei Porsche Design Mate 20 RS | LYA-L29CP 9.0.0.277 |
According to Huawei, you’ll need to have 6GB of storage available, and you can apply for the EMUI 9.1 update on the HiCare app.
EROFS, Huawei’s new file system, will reportedly bring users a host of performance upgrades. This includes a 20% increase in random read performance, faster application launches (10% increase), more storage savings, and a higher level of security.
Huawei explains that as EROFS is designed as read-only, 3rd parties can no longer rewrite the system partition—this ultimately means that the system is generally more secure from outside attacks.
GPU Turbo 3.0, first seen in the Huawei P30 series, is also coming to the Mate 20 series along with EMUI 9.1. This will bring (almost) full-frame running, AI image scheduling, and a generally better visual experience for gamers.
Speaking of the P30 series, EMUI 9.1 will also be bringing over the ‘Moon Mode’ feature that wowed many—including all of us over here at the office. However, the feature will only be rolling out to the more premium Mate 20 Pro and Mate 20 X devices.
