Huawei Nova 5 series announced with new Kirin 810 processor and quad-cameras

Barely 7 months after the Nova 4 was unveiled, Huawei has just announced its new Nova 5 series. This time, the Chinese smartphone maker has released a total of three models one go and they all come with quad-cameras at the rear.

Nova 5 Pro

The Huawei Nova 5 Pro is their flagship-class offering and it’s also the first Nova series to carry a “Pro” moniker. Upfront, it gets a 6.39″ Full HD+ OLED display that comes with a tiny notch and an in-display fingerprint sensor.

Powering the Nova 5 Pro is a familiar Kirin 980 processor which is configured with up to 8GB RAM and 256GB of storage. If you need more storage, you can expand storage further via NM Card up to 256GB in capacity.

The back of the Nova 5 Pro comes with a quad-camera setup which is similar to the standard Honor 20. It comes with a 48MP f/1.8 main camera, a 16MP f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle lens, a 2MP f/2.4 depth camera and a 2MP f/2.4 macro shooter. For selfies, it comes with a 32MP f/2.0 selfie shooter.

Despite being a flagship-class smartphone, the device comes with a modest 3,500mAh battery but it does support Huawei’s 40W SuperCharge charger via USB-C. Unfortunately, it lacks a 3.5mm headphone jack.

In China, the Nova 5 Pro is priced at 2,999CNY (about RM1,811) for the 128GB storage model and 3,399CNY (about RM2,052) for the 256GB storage version.

Nova 5

The second device is the standard Nova 5 and it is basically a more affordable version of the Nova 5 Pro. It also gets a 6.39″ Full HD+ OLED display with an in-display fingerprint sensor and the same quad-camera setup.

The biggest difference is its all-new 7nm based Kirin 810 processor that now comes with a dedicated NPU. It has 2x Cortex-A76 cores and 6x Cortex A55 cores. The Nova 5 comes with 8GB RAM and 128GB of storage which is also expandable via an NM card.

The rest of the specs are similar including the cameras, battery and 40W SuperCharge. The Nova 5 carries a listed price of 2,799CNY (about RM1,689).

Nova 5i

For those with a tighter budget, there’s also the Nova 5i. Unlike the other two models, the Nova 5i gets a 6.4″ punch-hole IPS display that pushes a full HD+ resolution. Under the hood, it runs on a familiar Kirin 710 processor that comes with either 6GB or 8GB RAM along with 128GB of storage. If you need more storage, it also accepts microSD card expansion on its a hybrid dual-SIM slot.

The quad-camera array is a notch below as it features a 24MP f/1.8 main camera, 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera, a 2MP depth camera and a 2MP macro shooter. The camera setup is similar to the Nova 4e but it comes with an extra camera for macro shots. For selfies, it has a 24MP f/2.0 selfie camera that’s placed on the top left corner of the screen.

Despite being the most affordable model of the series, the Nova 5i gets a larger 4,000mAh battery that charges via USB-C. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to come with any fast charging as it is bundled with a standard 5V2A charger. The device also gets a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor and it still retains a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The Huawei Nova 5i is priced at 1,999CNY (about RM1,207) for the 6GB RAM + 128GB storage and 2,199CNY (about RM1,327) for the 8GB RAM + 128GB storage model. So far there are no details yet for its international availability and it might take longer than usual due to its on-going restrictions imposed by the US government.
