Pokemon developers are building an app that gathers your sleep patterns and uses it for gameplay

The Pokemon Company is building an app that is able to track the sleep patterns of Pokemon players. The data, the developers say, will be used for gameplay. According to the company, the goal is to give players a reason to look forward to waking up in the morning.

“We want to turn sleep into entertainment,” said Tsunekazu Ishihara, chief executive of the Pokemon Company, at an event in Tokyo.

The app called, Pokemon Sleep, is expected to be released sometime next year but as a tease, Pokemon Go players can find a special sleeping Snorlax. The Snorlax is not much different from the normal one you’d find in the game except that it has “Yawn” as a special move.

The company is also working with Nintendo to develop an update to the Pokemon Go Plus that is able to track your sleep patterns. The data will then be used to unlock characters or other features designed around sleep and rest within the Pokemon Go game.
