Maxis appoints Gökhan Ogut as new CEO

Maxis has announced Gökhan Ogut as their new CEO (Chief Executive Officer) and the appointment will take effect on 1st May 2019. Gokhan is currently the COO (Chief Operating Officer) at Maxis and he will replace Robert Nason, the current interim CEO.

Gökhan had joined Maxis in September 2018 as the COO. Prior to this, he ran his own consultancy firm offering management and marketing consultancy services in Europe and the Middle East out of Istanbul, Turkey. Between 2009 to 2016, Gökhan had served at Vodafone Turkey where he held several senior positions which include Chief Marketing Officer, Chief Consumer Business Officer and Chief Executive Officer. Apart from the telecommunications industry, Gökhan had also held senior and management roles in several other companies such as Danone and Procter & Gamble.

During a media gathering yesterday evening, Gökhan had shared that Maxis aims to be the leading convergence services company in Malaysia. He added that Maxis will leverage on the strength of their 4G network and they want to offer fibre to everyone in Malaysia. When it comes to convergence, the telco will be focusing on services which include enterprise, entertainment and security.

When Maxis revealed is 2018 financial results, the telco has also announced an incremental capex of RM1 billion over the next three years to support this convergence strategy. They have a 5-year internal service revenue target of more than RM10 billion by 2023. For 2018, Maxis had recorded RM8,068 million in service revenue, which is a 2.5% dip from the previous year of RM8,271 million. The telco currently has more than 3.1 million subscribers with 282,000 subscribers added in 2018.

According to Maxis’ annual report, prepaid revenue had declined by 11.4% to RM3,399 million and they have attributed this to SIM consolidation and migration of customers to postpaid. However, Maxis still enjoys a high ARPU (Average Revenue per User) of RM42/month for prepaid. Interestingly, Maxis has increased their fibre revenue by 17% to RM359 million. They have increased their fibre subscriber base by 33% and they have over 249,000 home and enterprise subscribers.
