Beam: Another Singapore-based e-scooter sharing service is now in Malaysia

Another electric scooter sharing service is now available in Malaysia. The company is called Beam and they are based in Singapore. Beam is the second Singapore-based e-scooter sharing service that has since expanded to Malaysia. The other e-scooter sharing service in Malaysia is Neuron.

At the moment, Beam scooters are available in limited areas in central PJ. The pictures you see here are from our good friend Vernon Chan, who stumbled upon the Beam scooters near the University LRT station in PJ. The scooters look to be the Ninebot Kickscooter ES4 which have a range of up to 45km and a top speed of 30km/h.

The service is mainly operated via an app that is available for Android and iOS devices. So far, the company has not made an announcement about its availability in Malaysia. Perhaps this initial batch of scooters are a pilot study being conducted by Beam.

To start using a Beam scooter, all you need to do is download the Beam app, locate a scooter nearest to you and pay RM2.50 to unlock the scooter. You’re then charge RM0.30/minute of usage.

We have not had the chance to try out the service, but I assume it operates on the same premise as Neuron – the other e-scooter sharing service that’s available in Malaysia.

With Neuron, you pay a fee to unlock the scooter and you’re charged accordingly per hour of usage. You can only use the Neuron scooters in designated areas, and you will have to return the scooter to its dock when you’re done.

In October last year, Beam secured a US$6.4 million funding from investors including Sequoia India to deploy its electric scooters in Singapore with plans to expand to Malaysia, Australia and South Korea.
