Samsung has just announced that they will be utilising more environmentally sustainable materials in a bid to minimise waste generated from their packaging. This will cover smartphone, tablets and home appliances beginning from the first half of 2019.
For mobile devices which include smartphones, tablet and wearable products, Samsung will replace the standard plastic tray with pulp molds. Meanwhile, the individual wrapping bags for accessories will be substituted with eco-friendly materials.
On top of that, Samsung’s bundled chargers will ditch its glossy shiny surface for a matte finish. This minor tweak eliminates the need of having an additional plastic protection film, which helps in reducing plastic usage.
For bigger products such as TVs, refrigerators, air conditioners and washing machines, Samsung will utilise eco-friendly packaging bags containing recycled materials and bioplastics, which include non-fossil fuel materials like starch and sugar cane. When it comes to paper manuals and packaging, Samsung pledges to use only fibre materials that are certified by global environmental organisations such as Forest Stewardship Council, Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Scheme and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative.
According to the Korean manufacturer, they are stepping up in addressing society’s environmental issues such as resource depletion and plastic waste. They also added that Samsung will adopt more environmentally sustainable materials even if it means an increase in cost.
Samsung targets to only use paper packaging materials certified by forestry initiatives by next year. By 2030, the company aims to use a
cumulative 500,000 tons of recycled plastic and to collect 7.5 million tons of discarded products from 2009.
