DxOMark Mobile gave the Huawei Mate 20 Pro the same score as the P20 Pro but they forgot one thing

Finally, DxOMark Mobile has given its score for the Huawei Mate 20 Pro. Huawei’s previous flagship, the P20 Pro, has held the #1 spot for an extended period of time and many were expecting the Mate 20 Pro to raise the bar further with its new ultra-wide-angle lens.

If you’re expecting a new high-score on the DxOMark Mobile, unfortunately, the Mate 20 Pro shares the same score of 109 as the P20 Pro.

The team at DxOMark Mobile concluded that the Mate 20 Pro is a super-phone in every sense. They remarked that it is capable of producing excellent photo and video results across all shooting situations. It outperforms other prominent contenders such as the iPhone XS Max, Galaxy Note9 and the HTC U12+.

In terms of hardware, the Mate 20 Pro retains a similar 40MP main camera that has a large 1/1.7″ sensor while retaining an 8MP shooter that offers 3X optical zoom.

The biggest change on the Mate 20 Pro is the lack of a monochrome sensor. Instead, it features a super-wide-angle lens that adds versatility to its triple-camera setup. Because of that, DxOMark had found that it doesn’t offer the same level of image detail as the P20 Pro when it comes to zoom. However, they do note that the P20 Pro produces slightly more noise than the Mate 20 Pro.

If you look at the camera evaluation breakdown, the Mate 20 Pro had achieved the same 114 points for photos as the previous triple-camera flagship, however, it loses a point when it comes to videos. Despite that, the Mate 20 Pro still manages to get the same 109 score overall.

Throughout the evaluation, DxOMark didn’t really take into consideration the super-wide-angle lens, which is a key highlight for the Mate 20 Pro. Understandably, DxOMark has to maintain the same testing methodology in order to achieve a fair comparison against other tested devices.

About two years ago, DxOMark had revamped their testing protocols to include zoom and bokeh tests before the iPhone 8 was released. Since more manufacturers are expected to release new phones with wide-angle camera capabilities and we believe it is about time for DxOMark to include that aspect in their comprehensive tests.

As a reference, below is latest smartphone ranking on DxoMark Mobile.

Do you think DxOMark should include an ultra-wide-angle camera test in their methodology? Let us know in the comments below.
