Tun Mahathir was driven to the airport in a 34-year-old Proton Saga

Tun Dr. Mahathir was in Johor this afternoon for a meeting with Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar at Istana Bukit Serene. After his meeting, His Majesty had personally sent the Prime Minister to Senai International Airport in his first gen Proton Saga.

The first national car in blue had the registration number “Proton 1” and it was a gift from Tun Mahathir to the late Sultan Iskandar Sultan Ismail, the late father of the current Sultan of Johor in 1985. From the photos, the car is the 1.5S variant that comes with a manual transmission. Tun Mahathir had remarked at a press conference that the driving was good and there was no breakdown.

He added that the car had clocked 22,000km on the odometer. That’s quite impressive for a 34-year-old car. Tun Mahathir says that the well maintained vehicle is a good endorsement for Proton.

The first gen Proton Saga was priced at RM17,575 for the 1.3L version and RM19,005 for the 1.5L variant. Tun Mahathir had also purchased a blue Saga for his wife, Tun Siti Hasmah, that carried a registration number of “Proton 1001”. To refresh your memory, below is a Proton Saga TV commercial from 1985:
