These stunning images are taken using the 48MP Honor View 20

The Honor View 20 will be one of the first smartphones in the world to feature a 48MP rear camera. This is a big deal because if there’s one thing that can make or break a smartphone, it is the camera, but camera pixel count is not the final word when it comes to picture quality. It all depends on how well the hardware and software work together to deliver the final product.

Honor says the View 20, with its 48MP camera, will be able to deliver “unmatched photo quality and clarity, rivaling high-end single-lens reflex cameras”. These are bold claims however this is not the first time a smartphone brand has claimed camera performance that can hold a candle against a proper camera. Many have done so and many have failed to live up to expectations. The question is can the Honor View 20 match its own hype?

So confident is Honor with the capabilities of the View 20 that it commissioned an art exhibition in Hong Kong comprising of images taken using the device. Here are some full-resolution samples (the images are best viewed on your desktop):

The images are certainly amazing but there’s one caveat, they were taken by a professional. Would an average joe like me produce the same result? Was there any post-editing work done to the images? The information provided to us doesn’t explicitly say so we can’t say for sure.

Having said that, Huawei has a reputation for making smartphones with phenomenal cameras. The P20 Pro remains my weapon of choice when it comes to taking pictures and the Mate20 Pro is equally as good. I particularly like the wide-angle lens on the Mate20 Pro. It gives me more flexibility to take shots that were difficult or impossible to take without a wide-angle lens.

The Honor View 20 is generating a lot of hype because of its 48MP rear camera. The camera uses the Sony IMX586 sensor. The sensor has a 1/2.0-inch sensor size and it supports 4-in-1 “Light Fusion”. Each pixel has a size of 0.8-micron which can be combined to create a larger 1.6-micron pixel size for better low light performance. As a result, it can produce a high detail 12MP image that’s further enhanced with AI. This is somewhat similar to Huawei P20 Pro’s 40MP camera that produces a clear 10MP image.

The device is expected to make it public debut on 22 January 2019 in Paris. Keep it locked on to SoyaCincau.com to get the latest about the View 20.
