Confirmed: Samsung launching punch-hole display phone ahead of Huawei

Samsung will be the first manufacturer in the world to launch a phone that features a punch-hole display. The phone, called the Galaxy A8s will be making its debut on December 10 in China. Samsung posted the information on Weibo yesterday.

Interestingly, Huawei has also announced that it will be launching a device, the Nova 4,  that also features a punch-hole display on December 17 — a whole week after Samsung’s launch.

Samsung first released information about its unconventional punch-hole display at its developer conference last month. The display tech, which Samsung calls Infinity-O, features an all-screen design with a tiny hole physically punched out of the display. The punched-out hole will house the front camera. This is to allow for more screen area without the need for a notch or bezel making it possible for the front of the device to be all display.

Samsung announced the launch date of the Galaxy A8s on its official Weibo account. At first glance, you can see a punch hole cutout on the top left corner on the display. There is also Chinese text at the bottom of the poster that directly translates into “the hole can see the future”. While the sentence may sound funny, it could hint to more Samsung devices that will feature the Infinity-O display in the future.

Samsung has not revealed the specs of the device yet, but rumour has it that the A8s is expected to arrive with a 6.3-inch LCD display (2340×1080 pixel resolution) with an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. The device is expected to run a Snapdragon 710 processor with up to 6GB of RAM. The tiny hole is rumoured to house a 24MP camera at the front while the back gets a triple camera setup, according to early information. The triple camera module is expected to feature a regular lens and an ultra-wide lens for wide angle shots as well as a third sensor for bokeh effects, just like the Galaxy A7 (2018) that was launched few months ago.
