The OSMO Pocket is DJI’s smallest stabilised handheld camera

DJI makes one of the best gimbal systems that enables you to shoot super smooth videos. Now they have announced the Osmo Pocket and this is their smallest 3-axis stabilised handheld camera yet. 

The DJI Osmo Pocket looks smaller than a typical soda can and it weighs just 116g. It can shoot 4K videos up to 60fps with a 100Mbps bit rate as well as 12MP photos. The Osmo pocket’s camera uses a 1/2.3″ sensor with an 80-degree field of view and has an aperture of f/2.0.  

Despite being super compact, it has a mechanical 3-axis gimbal that’s steadier than your typical electronic and optical image stabilisation. There’s a small touch screen and buttons in front which allows you to control the Osmo pocket easily with a single hand. 

For better controls, you can attach your smartphone to it using an additional USB-C or lightning port attachment on the sides. DJI has also released an app called Mimo that allows you to create professional looking video stories with preset templates. There’s also Pro mode which enables you to capture RAW photos and D-Cinelike videos.  

The Osmo Pocket also comes with DJI’s suite of intelligent shooting modes. This include ActiveTrack, FPV mode, 3×3 Panorama, Motionlapse and NightShot. According to DJI, the Osmo Pocket can last up to 140 minutes on a single charge when used standalone without connecting to a smartphone or accessories. 

DJI has introduced a variety of accessories for the Osmo Pocket which include a waterproof case that can withstand being submerged in water up to 60m deep. There’s also a charging case which acts as a powerbank and it has additional storage compartments for your microSD cards, ND filters and adapters. 

Surprisingly, the Osmo Pocket does not support bluetooth and wireless connectivity on its own. You’ll need to attach a separate wireless module on the USB-C port at the bottom of the device. You can also plug in an external mic using a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter.

The DJI Osmo Pocket is priced at US$349 (about RM1,463) and it is expected to ship starting mid-December 2018. You can learn more on DJI’s product page.

Overall, this is a convenient video capturing tool which now comes in an even compact form factor. If that’s too expensive, you could consider using your existing smartphone with the DJI Osmo Mobile 2. These days, you can get it for less than RM450.
