The 30th SEA Games that is taking place in the Philippines next year has included esports as an official event. The announcement was made by the Philippines South East Asian Games Organising Committee (PhilSGOC) in partnership with the Philippine Olympic Committee and Razer as the official esports partner.
There will be a total of six gold medals for Esports which are allocated equally for console, PC and mobile categories. At the moment, Mobile Legends:Bang Bang has been confirmed as one of the esports titles and the full list will be finalised by 15 December 2018. Other gaming titles such as Dota 2 and League of Legends are expected to be included. Esports in SEA Games is accredited by the Asian Electronic Sports Federation.
According to Razer CEO, Min-Liang Tan, they have been in talks with the SEA Games committee to make Esports a recognised medaled event. They are also thrilled to be an official partner for the upcoming 2019 SEA Games.
It is interesting to note that esports was included in the 2018 Asian Games but it wasn’t a medal event. After the inclusion of esports in SEA Games, there’s a potential that it could be included as a sporting event at the upcoming 2024 Olympics in Paris.
