YouTube is doing its bid to curb the spread of fake news with the rollout of the Top News and Breaking News features to viewers in Malaysia. The video platform now indicates to viewers which videos are from reliable news sources. This, Youtube hopes, will improve the news viewing experience on the platform and make credible sources more readily accessible to viewers.
When a breaking news happens, the Breaking News “shelf” will highlight videos from credible news organisations about the event directly on the YouTube homepage.
With the Top News feature, relevant videos from credible news sources will be prominently highlighted in search results. For instance, if you were to search Stan Lee on Youtube, StarTV’s latest video on the legendary icon’s passing will be highlighted as Top News.
In July this year, YouTube announced it will invest US$25 million to battle fake news — especially for the urgent coverage of breaking news — on its platform. Youtube has over 1.8 billion monthly active users. The investment is part of the Google News Initiative (GNI), first introduced in March 2018 by the tech giant, to help the media and to deal with fake news, according to NDTV.
