The Oppo R17 Pro will be making its Malaysia debut next week on Thursday, November 22. In August, Oppo introduced the R17 Pro to the world but instead of a full-blown launch, the introduction was more of a teaser.
The Oppo R17 features a 19.5:9 aspect ratio, 6.4-inch FHD+ (2340×1080) display with a waterdrop notch design. The device has a 91.5% screen-to-body ratio and it is the first phone in the world to use Corning Gorilla Glass 6.
There’s also an in-display fingerprint sensor and a mid-range octa-core Snapdragon 710 processor mated with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of non-expandable storage.
Oppo is really proud of the camera on the R17 Pro and rightly so, the device packs a three-axis OIS optical image stabiliser that can eliminate shake up to the micron-level. The R17 Pro may also be the first smartphone in the world to feature a triple camera with a variable aperture lens.
The triple camera setup consists of a 12MP main camera with variable aperture (f/1.5 to f/2.4) mechanism that adjusts automatically to lighting conditions. The main camera is mated with a 20MP f/2.6 sensor while the third camera is a dedicated 3D depth sensor. In front, the device gets a 25MP selfie shooter with a rather absurd 8 million beautification options.
Aside from the variable aperture lens, the other highlight feature of the R17 Pro’s camera is the Ultra Night Mode. Ultra Night Mode is similar to Huawei’s Night Mode seen in the P20 Pro and Mate 20 Pro, and if it is as good as the Huawei phones in terms of capturing low-light images, the R17 Pro might just be a good phone to have with you if you’re planning to take a lot of night shots but we’ll reserve our final judgement in our review.
The Oppo R17 Pro is powered by a 3,700mAh battery that charges via USB-C with Oppo’s very own SuperVOOC fast charging technology. SuperVOOC is capable of charging the device from 0-40% in just 10 minutes. Out of the box, the Oppo R17 Pro runs Android 8.1 Oreo with Oppo’s own ColorOS 5.2 skin.
The Oppo R17 Pro is priced at CNY4,300 in China (about RM2,583). The device replaces the Oppo R15 Pro which was released in Malaysia in May this year. Traditionally, Oppo’s R-series of smartphones sit in the mid-range segment of the smartphone market. That’s typically below the RM2,500 range. So we expect the R17 Pro to be priced somewhere around this price bracket when it goes on sale here.
