Before the Galaxy S10 is announced next year, Samsung has just unveiled its latest flagship mobile processor, the Exynos 9820. This succeeds the current Exynos 9810 chip that’s powering the Galaxy S9 and Note9 series.
The new Exynos 9820 boasts high AI performance with its integrated Neural Processing Unit (NPU). According to Samsung, you can expect better AI-enhanced photos to advanced AR as the new processor can perform AI-related tasks seven times faster than the current Exynos 9810.
In terms of CPU, the Exynos 9820 has a triple-cluster architecture that consists of two 4th generation custom CPU cores for ultra-high performance, two Cortex-A75 cores for optimal performance and four Cortex-A55 cores for power efficiency. Performance wise, the new chip boasts 20% higher single-core performance, 15% better multi-core performance and it’s also up to 40% more power efficient compared to its predecessor.
The Exynos 9820 is manufactured based on a 8mm LPP (Low Power Plus) FinFET process. Compared to a 10nm LPP process, the new chip claims to more frugal on power by 10%.
For gaming, the new Samsung chip uses a Mali-G76 MP12 GPU. It promises to offer up to 40% better performance and 35% better power efficiency compared to the Mali-G72 MP18 GPU on the current Exynos 9810.
Connectivity wise, the Exynos 9820 solution comes with an LTE-Advanced Pro modem that supports LTE Cat.20. This is capable of delivering downloads up to 2.0Gbps with 8x carrier aggregation and uploads of up to 316Mbps.
With such speeds, Samsung says you can download a 3.6GB Full HD movie in just 15 seconds. Of course, provided if your network supports it. The modem also support 4×4 MIMO, 256 QAM and enhanced Licensed-Assisted Access.
To capture moments in greater definition, the chip also has a new multi-format codec (MFC) that can support encoding and decoding of 8K videos at 30fps. It also supports encoding and decoding of 4K UHD videos at 150 fps with 10-bit HEVC (H.265).
The new Exynos 9 Series 9820 chip is expected to be in mass production by end of this year and it is likely to make its debut on the upcoming Galaxy S10. For more info, you can check out the Exynos 9820 page.
