2018 has been a busy year for Xiaomi. Not only they have launched more affordable devices like the Redmi Note 5, Redmi Note 6 and the Mi A2, but the Chinese smartphone maker has also introduced multiple flagship models like the Mi 8, the POCOPHONE F1 and most recently the Mi MIX 3. To increase its global reach, they have also expanded aggressively in Europe.
Before the year comes to an end, Xiaomi has already achieved its annual target by hitting its 100 millionth shipment in October. That’s 8 million more phones than 2017 and there’s still two months to go.
Since Q4 2017, Xiaomi has become the 4th largest smartphone maker in shipments, overtaking OPPO which has held the #4 spot for quite some time. According to the latest IDC tracker, Xiaomi had shipped 31.9 million smartphones in Q2 2018 and that’s a 48.8% increase compared to the same period in 2017. It’s reported that Xiaomi currently controls a 9.5% smartphone market share, which is a significant growth from 6.2% in Q2 2017.
The final quarter will be interesting to watch as Xiaomi is expected to push more sales with the upcoming 11.11 promotion. The Chinese brands such as Huawei and Xiaomi have been growing steadily with double-digit growth for the past few quarters. A few months ago, Apple had dropped to the #3 spot behind Huawei and Xiaomi might have a chance to be the world’s #3 smartphone brand next year if it continues to show growth at the current pace.
