Huawei Mate 20’s key new features revealed

Huawei will be unveiling its new Mate 20 series next month and we got clear look thanks to a leak that had surfaced two days ago. Apart from having a more powerful 7nm Kirin 980 processor, the Mate 20 series will come with a couple of new features and most of them are now revealed thanks to a leak from an Israeli site.

As speculated before, the Mate 20 Pro will come with a 4,200mAh battery which is 200mAh more than its current Mate 10 Pro and P20 Pro series. To recharge the device quickly, Huawei will be introducing a newer SuperCharge 2.0 feature, that claims to do 70% charge in just 30 minutes. As a comparison, the current Mate 10 with a 4,000mAh battery can charge up to 58% in 30 minutes using a 4.5V 5A SuperCharge power adapter.

Also supported is fast wireless charging with a high 15W output which is higher than what you get from Samsung and Apple.

With the new Kirin 980 processor that has an 8-core CPU and 12-core GPU, Huawei claims that it can outperform Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 processor on Geekbench and GFXBench benchmarks. According to the source, the Mate 20 will get 4GB of RAM while the Mate 20 Pro will come with 6GB of RAM. Both models come with 128GB of storage as standard.

If you need more storage, Huawei appears to be introducing a new nano-sized NM card which is about the size of a nano-SIM. They didn’t reveal any specification for this storage so it isn’t clear if it will perform better than microSD.

In the camera department, both Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro will come with a triple-camera + LED flash array that’s arranged in a 2×2 square format. You can expect the same hardware as the P20 Pro. Huawei appears to be adding a new AI Smart Zoom feature. From the image below, this would enable you to capture moving objects easier with automatic focus and zoom tracking.

As expected, the Mate 20 Pro will also feature an in-screen fingerprint sensor. If you prefer to unlock the device faster, there’s also 3D Face Unlock which Huawei claims to be faster than the iPhone X by half a second.

When the Mate 10 series was announced, Huawei had introduced Easy Projection. This is seen as a simplified Samsung Dex solution as all you’ll need is a single USB-C to HDMI adapter to convert the Mate into a desktop-like machine. For the Mate 20 series, Huawei is going completely wireless with support for wireless projection. You’ll definitely need a compatible wireless monitor for this to work.

Apart from smartphones, Huawei could potentially reveal a new smartwatch and a pair of wireless earphones that is expected to be called the Freebuds 2 Pro. For wireless Freebuds 2 Pro, the earpiece will use bone conductivity to enhance its audio pickup. This would enable you to unlock your device with just your voice even in noisy situations.

Among the two, the Mate 20 Pro (codename Laya) will have the biggest display yet at 6.9″ and it will be pushing a Quad HD+ resolution on a dual-curved screen display. It will also get IP67 rated dust and water resistance like the Mate 10 Pro and it also comes with dual stereo speakers. Meanwhile, the Mate 20 (codename Hima) will get a flat 6.53″ Full HD+ display and it comes with a lower IP53 dust and water resistance. The battery is slightly smaller at 4,000mAh, but it still supports fast wired and wireless charging.

If the leaked specs are true, the Mate 20 series is the largest flagship smartphone offering from Huawei. Both have larger screens than the iPhone XS Max and they have a large battery which should be able to provide more than a full day’s worth of battery life. The Huawei Mate 20 event is taking place in London on 16 October 2018 and we expect pre-orders to commence in Malaysia shortly after its global announcement.
