First Apple removed the headphone jack, now the dongle’s gone too?

Two years ago, Apple made a controversial decision by eliminating the 3.5mm headphone jack from the iPhone 7.

And if these rumours are to be believed, it looks like Apple’s not slowing down their wireless push as multiple reports have surfaced that indicate that they might not include a lightning to 3.5mm headphone jack adapter in the box with the next iPhone.

According to a research note by Barclays that was seen by MacRumors, Apple will no longer bundle their iPhone models with a headphone dongle.  The research note claims that Cirrus Logic, a supplier for the adapter has “confirmed” that the adapter will not be included in the box with the new iPhones. Despite all of this, Apple will continue selling the 3.5mm adapter separately for users who still have not transitioned into the wireless era. The 3.5mm adapter is currently priced at RM46 in Malaysia.

The decision of eliminating the headphone jack two years ago attracted widespread criticism from the public. I can only imagine how people will react if these rumours turn out to be true.

But it is not surprising to see Apple removing the adapter from the bundle considering Apple’s continued push towards wireless headphones, including their own AirPods. It has been 2 years since the 3.5mm port was removed and we can see that other manufacturers have slowly been phasing them out too. Just take a look at OPPO’s Find X and the Xiaomi Mi 8, both of which do not have a headphone jack attached.

From what we know, Apple has not release any official statement about it yet. But we are bound to hear more when the new iPhone is launched. In the meantime, let us know what you think of this move in the comments below.
