You won’t be able to watch the 2018 FIFA World Cup on Unifi TV

UPDATE: You can watch 41 World Cup matches for free on your smartphone.

Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) will be airing the 2018 FIFA World Cup for free with 27 live matches. For those who have UniFi TV (formerly known as HyppTV) at home, you have free access to free-to-air (FTA) channels but unfortunately, you won’t be able to watch the live matches through the UniFi TV set top box.

In an SMS sent to all Unifi subscribers, TM has announced that the 2018 FIFA World Cup matches will not be shown on UniFi TV due to broadcast rights. During the matches, you’ll see a content blackout when you tune in to RTM channels on Unifi TV. This has happened before with the previous 2014 World Cup that was held in Brazil.

If you don’t have Astro at home, you’ll have to watch the match via the old analogue or digital terrestrial TV. Astro has the full rights to broadcast all World Cup matches and alternatively, you can watch 22 live matches for free via the Astro Go app.

UPDATE: You can also watch 41 World Cup matches for free on your smartphone via the RTM Mobile app.
