LG G7 ThinQ is a flagship smartphone that has a notch and AI dual-cameras

LG has finally introduced the LG G7 ThinQ, its latest flagship smartphone that succeeds the LG G6. This is the phone that would compete directly with current flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Huawei P20 series.

The LG G6 was one of the first smartphones to come with an 18:9 display which allows it to pack a larger 5.7″ screen on a body that feels like a 5.2″ smartphone. This time, LG is going bigger with 6.1″ M+ LCD that does QuadHD+ resolution of 3120 x 1440 pixels. It has a brightness of up to 1000 nits while consuming 30% less power than the G6.

The screen is now taller with a 19.5:9 display aspect ratio and like most new phones, it comes with a notch. If you don’t like the notch, you can “hide” under settings for a more traditional looking display. There’s still a chin at the bottom of the phone which LG says is 50% slimmer than the G6.

Design wise, the LG G7 is still assembled with glass and metal. There’s also IP68 dust and water resistance, and it’s also MIL-STD 810G compliant for better durability.

Under the hood, it runs on a top of the line Snapdragon 845 processor that comes with 4GB of LPDDR4x RAM and 64GB of UFS 2.1 storage. There’s also the LG G7+ ThinQ version that offers 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Storage is still expandable via microSD up to 2TB.

Similar to predecessors, it also retains a dual-camera setup that offers wide-angle shots. The G7 gets a primary 16MP f/1.6 camera and a secondary 16MP f/1.9 shooter with a wide 107-degree angle. Following the footsteps of Huawei, it gets an AI CAM which recognises your subject with high precision and selects the scene while automatically applying adjustments for the perfect shot. For selfies, the G7 comes with an 8MP f/1.9 wide-angle camera.

On the left side of the device, there’s an additional button which is used to trigger Google Assistant. Double pressing this button will also give you Google Lens which provides more info based on what it sees from the camera.

Audio is still a key highlight for the LG G7 ThinQ. You still get a 32-bit HiFi Quad DAC like the LG V30 but it now gets DTS:X 3D Surround sound enhancement which delivers 7.1 channel surround sound for both earphones and speakers. For richer bass, the G7 also has a BoomBox feature that packs 17x enlarged resonance chamber and 39% larger speaker than the V30.

The battery is smaller than its predecessor with a 3,000mAh capacity and it charges via USB-C. According to LG, the combination of the new Snapdragon 845 processor and Android 8.0 Oreo would provide better power efficiency compared to its earlier models. It supports 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0 BLE, NFC, wireless charging and it also retains a headphone jack. The G7 ThinQ is available in New Platinum Grey, New Aurora Black and New Moroccan Blue.

LG as a smartphone brand is almost non-existent in Malaysia. The LG V30 which was announced in August last year took seven months to reach Malaysia officially. If you’re interested, you could get it faster from grey importers such as DirectD.
