Play Android games without downloading them with Google Play Instant

If you’ve ever wanted to try out a game from the Google Play Store without needing to download the entire game onto your 16GB smartphone, the future is looking good for you. Google‘s giving you the ability to play games without actually installing them on your smartphone with Google Play Instant.

As its name suggests, the idea is to let you play games without needing to download the entire file which, as far as I can tell, is incredibly useful. To give this new feature a spin, all you need to do is tap on the “Try Now” button on app page next to the “Install” button and you’re good to go.

There will then be a brief loading period before Google launches you directly into the app, letting you play what is basically a demo of the game. So far we’ve only gotten it to work on one game called Mighty Battles and we’re not sure if it’s a region thing but we couldn’t get it to work on Clash Royale or any of the other popular games we tried. If you’ve found another game with this feature be sure to let us know what it is in the comments below!

I honestly think it’s a great way for people to try out games before actually downloading them. Google says that they’ve been encouraging game developers to reduce file sizes so that the Instant App version of the game is small, like less than 10MB small. This means that for the most part, it’s a demo of a game — maybe 30 seconds to a couple of minutes of gameplay at best — so it’s enough to give you a feel but not much more.

Once the game is done, it’ll prompt you to play again or to install it.

From my testing, the game played pretty smoothly but there were one or two instances where there was noticeable stuttering but not enough to really ruin gameplay. To give this feature a try, your phone needs to be running at least Android Lollipop.
