HTC’s next flagship smartphone will be the U12+ with quad cameras

While everyone’s getting hyped up about the tri-main-cam Huawei P20 and P20 Pro, everyone’s favourite leak specialist Evan Blass dropped some details — as well as a photo — of HTC’s next big flagship smartphone. Apparently, it’ll be called the HTC U12+ even though there probably will only be one device.

Yup, it’s a plus without a minus. A large without a small. A singular flagship for the entirety of 2018. That’s a lot of pressure for any smartphone but HTC probably isn’t doing this by choice. They are spread pretty thin in the smartphone department after all.

Nevertheless, things look pretty promising for this handset, especially since it still looks distinctly HTC — no notch here, apparently. According the report, the smartphone will feature a large 6″ LCD panel that pushes a QHD+ resolution (likely 2880×1440 pixels) with minimal bezels much like the U11+ did, which means it will probably also be a gorgeous screen.

Inside, the handset will reportedly be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor with 6GB of RAM and either 64GB or 128GB of internal storage that you can further expand with a microSD card. Keeping everything powered is a 3,420 mAh battery, which is significantly smaller than the 3,930 mAh cell in the U11+.

In the camera department — which HTC has always excelled at — the U12+ will apparently feature a dual camera system this time. This combo will consist of a 16MP sensor and a secondary 12MP sensor but we’re not sure what the secondary camera’s function will be. In front, you’re also getting dual cameras in the form of a pair of 8MP sensors.

Returning to the phone is its rear-mounted fingerprint scanner and HTC Edge Sense — that’s the one where you squeeze the phone to do stuff — which you will either love or hate.

Finally, the smartphone will apparently be revealed sometime in early May.

Things look pretty good so far for HTC’s upcoming flagship smartphone. Considering how good their single-camera setup is, I’m definitely interested to see what the company can do with a dual-camera module this time. Besides that, I’m also glad they didn’t just jump on the notch bandwagon like ASUS’ ZenFone 5 and the Huawei P20, instead choosing to retain their design.

That said, these are still just “leaks” so take them with the appropriate amount of skepticism.
