Lenovo’s ultimate ThinkPads have arrived in Malaysia

It’s always exciting for people who work on the go when Lenovo launches a brand new set of ThinkPads, especially when its their flagship ThinkPad X1 laptops. And there’s good reason for that because they’re really good at what they’re designed to do.

This year, it’s no different, only it kind of is because my favourite ThinkPad X1 device has a brand new feature that I’ve been longing for.

Today, Lenovo launched three brand new ThinkPad X1s, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon, ThinkPad X1 Yoga and the ThinkPad X1 Tablet. Let’s start with my favourite.

ThinkPad X1 Carbon

While I acknowledge the advantages of a 2-in-1 convertible, I’ve always been a sucker for the standard laptop form-factor and the ThinkPad X1 Carbon is kind of like the ultimate expression of that. When it comes to productivity, the X1 Carbons have never really disappointed as they’re always so versatile.

2018s ThinkPad X1 Carbon is in pretty much the same situation only this time Lenovo’s also included a touch-screen variant with this super light productivity device, which I am pretty happy about. That said, I am a little disappointed that the touchscreen only comes with the version that features a Full HD (1920×1080) display and not the one with the QHD (2560×1440) panel.

This was a little perplexing to me especially considering the fact that the ThinkPad X1 Yoga has a QHD display with touch-screen capabilities.

Nevertheless, the rest of the ThinkPad X1 Carbon is just an excellent collection of hardware. In Malaysia, you can configure it to feature up to an 8th Generation Intel Core i7-8650 with vPro processor, 16GB of LPDDR3 2133Mhz memory, a 1TB PCIe SSD and a 14″ HDR QHD 2560×1440 pixel IPS display with Dolby Vision.

It’s also got a solid selection of ports including two Thunderbolt 3 ports, two USB Type A 3.0 ports, a HDMI port, a headphone & microphone jack, a microSD card reader and a native Ethernet dongle.

The best part? It’s all crammed into a body that’s just 1.13 kg. Oh and how could I forget to mention that the X1 Carbon has an excellent keyboard to type on.

Prices for the ThinkPad X1 Carbon start at RM7,999 and will be available online and at all Lenovo exclusive stores starting today.

ThinkPad X1 Yoga

Next, you’ve got the 360-degree convertible X1 Yoga. This model can be configured with up to an 8th Generation Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of LPDDR3 2133Mhz memory, a 1TB PCIe SSD and a 14-inch QHD HDR display with Dolby Vision.

The biggest difference is that all of these variants come with a touch-screen and the laptop is a little heavier, weighing 1.4kg instead. It does come with a pen for those who like to sketch. Besides that, it’s very similar to the X1 Carbon, especially in its build quality.

My favourite thing about this 360-degree convertible is the fact that when you flip the screen around to convert it into tablet mode, the keys in the keyboard retract and tuck themselves neatly into the chassis for a much flatter body.

I wish more 360-degree convertibles do this because it’s frankly just ingenious. You get an easier surface to hold (and rest it on), and you don’t have to worry about the keys catching on anything and popping right off.

ThinkPad X1 Tablet

Finally you’ve got the ThinkPad X1 Tablet that can also be spec-ed with the same kind of internals as the other two. The big difference is that, well, it’s a tablet much like the Microsoft Surface Pro.

Not my favourite form-factor but it’s hard to argue with how premium this thing feels. Unfortunately, we don’t have much information when it comes to pricing — that’s set to be revealed later — but the ThinkPad X1 Tablet is set to go on sale sometime in April 2018.
