Huawei P20 and P20 Pro: More hardware details revealed

In just two weeks, Huawei will unveil the P20 series, its first flagship smartphones for 2018. Since Malaysia is a key market for Huawei, local pre-orders could start very soon and the P20 series will compete directly with Samsung’s latest Galaxy S9 and S9+. Ahead of its big event in Paris, German tech site, WinFuture, has dropped even more clues on the upcoming dual and triple camera flagships.

Huawei P20 Pro

As we’ve seen before, the P20 series consists of 3 models – the P20 Pro, P20 and P20 Lite. The Huawei P20 Pro is their top of the line model which comes with a total of 3 cameras.

Taking its FullView display further is its new “notch” display which is now pushing a wider display aspect ratio of 19:9. According to several benchmark listings, the P20 and P20 Pro pushes a resolution of 2240×1080, which is taller than the usual 2160×1080 resolution. While the display is stretched towards the top edges of the phone, the P20 and P20 Pro still have a bottom chin which houses a front-facing fingerprint sensor.

If we look at the side profile, it has a nice rounded frame but the rear glass appears to be thicker than the front. On the previous P8, P9 and P10, the camera is flush with the rest of the body but now it has a noticeable bump that protrudes slightly.

In terms of display, WinFuture shared that the P20 Pro will come with an OLED screen while the standard P20 will settle for an LCD panel. Under the hood, both models are expected to run on the same Kirin 970 processor as the current Mate 10 series. No details on RAM and storage yet but we expect the P20 Pro to carry more storage which is speculated to be as high as 256GB onboard.

As revealed by the text at the back of the device, the P20 Pro is the first smartphone to feature a Leica co-developed Vario-Summilux lens that has both f/1.6 and f/2.4 aperture. Since it has a focal length of 27-80mm, it’s an indication that the P20 Pro could offer 3X Optical Zoom on the third camera.

Huawei P20

For the standard P20, it will feature a Leica Dual-Camera setup similar to the Mate 10 series. It uses the same Summilux f/1.6 lens and it is likely to retain the same RGB + monochrome setup. The cameras are said to be assisted by an infrared white balance sensor and laser auto focus.

When the Huawei Mate 10 series was released, their top of the line Mate 10 Pro model lacked a headphone jack and a microSD slot. If you need these two, you could only get it on the standard (non-Pro) Mate 10 model.

Based on a recent Huawei P20 render, we noticed that the headphone jack is missing on the bottom of the device. Now it seems that Huawei could be ditching the microSD expansion slot completely for both P20 and P20 Pro as the purported manual shows a removable tray that’s dedicated to dual nano-SIMs only.

In terms of battery, the P20 is said to come with a 3,400mAh unit while the P20 Pro comes with a larger 4,000mAh capacity, which is the same as their current Mate 10 series.

Huawei P20 Lite

For the P20 Lite, there are no further details. Despite being the most affordable model, it does come with a glass back and the blue version looks like an honor 8 with its shimmering glass effect. It’s also the first “Lite” phone in the P-series to feature a dual-camera setup.
