The FIFA World Cup 2018 is taking place in June this year. Since vivo is the official smartphone sponsor, they are currently running a selfie contest where they are giving away a FIFA World Cup ticket to a lucky winner. The interesting part of the announcement is the mention of their new vivo V9 which appears to be a 24MP Selfie smartphone.
This would succeed its current V7/V7+ series which was announced just six months ago. While the V7 and V7+ came with a FullView 18:9 display, this new model will feature the iPhone X “Notch”.
If you look at the poster below, the vivo V9 will be their key focus during the World Cup. You can see a “see-through” illustration of a phone that has a distinctive narrower notch at the top.
Ahead of its official announcement, a vivo V9 billboard had popped up at Bangka Island, Indonesia. This is a clear indication that the device will be announced very soon.
The ad gives us a clearer view of the notch and its bottom chin, which is very similar to the ZenFone 5 that was launched in Barcelona. There are no further details of the specs but we are guessing that it could be featuring an entry to mid-range level hardware like the current vivo V7.
To recap, the vivo V7+ was launched first with a 5.99″ HD+ 720p display that’s powered by an entry-level Snapdragon 450 processor. Then two months later, the Chinese brand released a slightly more affordable V7 that comes with a smaller 5.7″ display while retaining similar specs with less storage.
Hopefully, vivo would put better specs for its upcoming V9 than its current V7/V7+ lineup. At the very least, we expect it to come with a display that pushes a FullHD+ resolution.
