The Huawei P10 and P10 Plus were announced a year ago during MWC 2017. This year the Chinese smartphone maker won’t be making a splash at Barcelona. Instead, the upcoming P-series flagship will be announced at a separate event that’s happening next month.
Ahead of its big reveal, the folks at Android Authority have gotten their hands on a prototype Huawei P20 which may or may not be the final unit.
This particular unit looks very different from what was leaked earlier. The rear also gets a glossy finish while the dual-camera bump is arranged horizontally at the edge like its Huawei P9 and P10 models.
Similar to the current Mate 10 series, Huawei is trimming its bezels at the front by shrinking its forehead and chin. As seen above, the FullView display is stretched as close as possible to the edge of the phone. Another interesting omission is a physical fingerprint sensor and if you take a closer look above, there’s a faint icon on the screen which suggests that it could be an in-display sensor.
Looking at the bottom, you’ll find a USB Type-C port with symmetrical speaker grills on both sides of the charging port. Another noticeable omission is a 3.5mm headphone jack, just like its top of the line Huawei Mate 10 Pro.
On the P9 and P10 series, the camera has always been flush with its metal back but on this prototype, it protrudes slightly like its current Huawei Mate 10 series. Again, this is just a prototype and the final product might look closer to the renders we saw from @onleaks.
On most smartphones, you’ll find a power/wake button and a volume rocker at the sides. However, this prototype unit has something different. There are some perforated patterns at the sides which could be touch or pressure sensitive like the HTC U11. If the volume controls are no longer mechanical, we hope there’s some haptic feedback like Apple’s new home button on the iPhone 7/8.
From the teasers and rumours, Huawei is expected to introduce a new flagship that will come with triple cameras at the rear. Since this prototype has two, it might be possible that the extra camera will be exclusive for its bigger P20 Pro or P20 Plus model. Below are some photos of the prototype next to a Huawei P10.
