Redmi 5: Xiaomi’s sub-RM600 “Full screen” smartphone could land in Malaysia soon

If you want to go “Full View” or “Full Screen” without burning a hole in your wallet, Xiaomi’s latest Redmi 5 series could be hitting our shores very soon. Announced earlier this month, the Redmi 5 and the Redmi 5 Plus are one of the most value for money smartphones that come with a tall 18:9 display from as low as 799CNY (about RM497).

The Redmi 5 has gotten the SIRIM green light with the model number MDG1. Meanwhile, it’s bigger sibling, the Redmi 5 Plus, was also spotted earlier on our Malaysian SIRIM database with the model number MEG7. These are signs that both models could go on sale very soon.

To recap, the Redmi 5 gets a 5.7″ HD 720p display which pushes a resolution of 1440×720 and it runs on a 14nm Snapdragon 450 processor. It comes in either 2GB RAM + 16GB storage or 3GB RAM + 32GB of storage, both expandable via microSD. For taking pictures, it gets a 12MP f/2.2 main camera and a front-facing 5MP selfie shooter. Powering the device is a 3,300mAh battery.

Meanwhile, the larger Redmi 5 Plus, which is also seen as a successor of the Redmi Note 4, gets a larger 5.99″ display that pushes a FullHD+ resolution of 2160×1080. It runs on a familiar Snapdragon 625 processor that comes with either 3GB RAM + 32GB storage and 4GB RAM + 64GB storage. The rest of the specs are quite similar to the Redmi 5 but it gets a larger 4,000mAh battery.

In terms of pricing, the Redmi 5 is priced at 799CNY (about RM497) for 2GB RAM + 16GB storage and 899CNY (about RM559) for 3GB RAM + 32GB storage version. Meanwhile, the larger Redmi 5 Plus is going for 999CNY (RM621) for 3GB RAM + 32GB storage and 1,299CNY (RM808) for 4GB RAM + 64GB storage. If both models are available, we are guessing that the Redmi 5 could be priced around RM500-600, while the Redmi 5 Plus could go on sale at around RM700-800 for the base model.
