Xiaomi Redmi 5 will bring 18:9 “full screen” display to the masses

Xiaomi will be announcing its new affordable Redmi 5 series that would come with an 18:9 Full View display. This could be the most affordable smartphone that offers a big screen experience in a smaller smartphone body.

From the looks of it, there will be two models – a Redmi 5 and a Redmi 5 Plus. According to its TENAA certification listing, the Redmi 5 will have a 5.7″ screen that has a 1440×720 screen resolution in a 18:9 aspect ratio. The processor is listed as a 1.8GHz Octa-Core unit with up to 4GB of RAM and storage options of up to 64GB.

Meanwhile, the slightly bigger model which presumably is the Redmi 5 Plus comes with an even larger 5.99″ display that pushes a FullHD+ resolution of 2160×1080. That comes with a 2.0GHz processor with 4GB of RAM and storage options of either 32GB or 64GB.

Both models are quite an upgrade for a Redmi series. Even the screen size is larger than any Redmi Note series released to date. It might be possible that the Redmi 5 Plus is the successor of the current Redmi Note 4.

Based on the images above, the front does have a quite a bit of space on the forehead and chin but it lacks any capacitive buttons at the bottom. Over at the rear, it looks like a typical Redmi product with a single camera lens and a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor.

Interestingly, one of the models might be coming to Malaysia soon. A Xiaomi device with the model number MEG7 was spotted on our SIRIM database. The Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus will be announced in China next Thursday on 7th December and it will be priced from under 1,000 CNY (RM618).
