Nokia will be one step ahead of its competition in software updates

Android Oreo has barely begun rolling out to Android devices and HMD Global (the company that owns Nokia) has revealed that they will update the current roster of Nokia smartphones to the next major version of Android.

Well, every phone except the Nokia 3310, obviously.

Nokia’s line of Android smartphones — Nokia 3, 5, 6 and the flagship Nokia 8 — launched running Android Nougat. Now, HMD also committed to updating their smartphones to the upcoming Android P when that launches next year. This means that Nokia’s line of devices will receive two major OS updates which is something we don’t see as often as we like, especially on entry-level Android devices.

I guess that’s the benefit of running near-stock Android. Having such a light skin makes it less of a hassle for Nokia to push updates from Google.

Further, HMD’s CTO said on Twitter that they would unlock the bootloader on Nokia’s Android smartphones too so you can flash custom ROMs in to keep your device up to date even after Nokia ceases official support.

This is exciting stuff for Nokia Android users who want their phones to last. Let’s hope Nokia can deliver on its commitment.
