Huawei Mate 10 to come with f/1.6 camera and water resistance?

Even months before the iPhone 8/iPhone X was revealed, Huawei believes that their upcoming Mate 10 is the phone worth waiting for. Its mobile chief had even boasted that the Mate 10 will provide a much longer battery life with a full-screen display and it promises better photography and features to compete with Apple.

With about 3 weeks to go, a couple of purported Mate 10 promo materials had surfaced. It looks like screenshots taken from a video and they reveal some interesting features of their upcoming flagship.

The first picture above appears to be their Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro that comes with a bigger screen and thinner bezels. One of it has a Huawei branding at the bottom chin (which means it has a rear fingerprint sensor) while the other model manages to fit a fingerprint sensor in front.

Moving towards the back, the Mate 10 appears to have a unique blue/gold colour scheme similar to the Huawei P10 series but it is hard to tell if the back uses glass or metal. It’s worth mentioning that the design itself is quite similar to the renders we’ve seen before. Interestingly, the promo materials indicate that the Mate 10 comes with IP67 dust/water resistant, which is a first for a Huawei flagship.

In the camera department, the Mate 10 is shown to have dual-camera f/1.6 setup. This is the highest aperture on a smartphone camera which is on par with the LG V30. Oddly, the image shows LEICA SUMMARIT-H marking next to the camera and usually, SUMMARIT-H is used for their f/2.2 lens on the Huawei P9/Mate 9. Their current flagship, the Huawei P10 Plus uses SUMMILUX-H lens for its f/1.8 camera and we expect a different name for its newer lens.

With AI being a key focus on its new Kirin 970 chipset, its new camera will gain some intelligent features as well. From the looks of it, your shots can be optimised with better real-time scene detection.

Like its previous Mate series, you can expect a class-leading battery capacity to keep you going for a full day. It looks like the Mate 10 will continue to pack a huge 4,000mAh battery which also supports Huawei’s Super Charge quick-charge technology.

The leaked promo materials look pretty legit but it could be a non-final copy judging based on its misspelling for some of its text. Overall, the two biggest things to look out for are water resistance and its new f/1.6 dual-camera. We’ll find out for sure on 16 October 2017.
