This is Sony’s upcoming compact flagship smartphone

There’s one thing that Sony is very good at and it’s the ability to create flagship phones that are truly compact. Beginning from the Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray and then continuing with the Xperia Z Compact series, Sony is able to fill a niche where people want the best phones that can really fit comfortably in your hands. This breaks the norm where you have to accept a larger screen if you’re looking for a flagship phone.

On the last Xperia X Compact, it was quite an underwhelming phone as it gets a mid-range hardware and it lacks Sony’s signature water resistance. After realising that they can’t sell mediocre phones at a premium, Sony is trying to make things right with their upcoming Xperia XZ1 Compact.

The folks at 91mobiles have just released exclusive renders of Sony’s new compact flagship phone in collaboration with @OnLeaks. At first glance, it does look similar to the bigger Xperia XZ1.

The camera flash/sensors have the same placements at the top while its camera bump is tucked at the top left corner at the rear. While it is smaller in footprint, the Xperia XZ1 Compact is noticeably thicker which is the same as its previous Xperia Z compacts.

The button placements for the power, volume and dedicated camera button remain unchanged and it also gets a removable flap/tray to access the SIM/microSD slot. At the front, you can see two symmetrical speaker grills which indicates that it will get front facing stereo speakers.

According to 91Mobiles, the Xperia XZ1 Compact will retain a 4.6″ display that’s likely to push HD 720p resolution. Under the hood, it is reported to run on a Snapdragon 835 processor along with 4GB of RAM. Powering the XZ1 Compact is a 2,600mAh battery which is probably sufficient for a full day’s of use considering pushes a lower resolution screen.

The Xperia XZ1 Compact will be announced alongside the Xperia XZ1 during IFA 2017 in Berlin. Would you be interested in a smaller Snapdragon 835 flagship? Or have you moved on to bigger screens? Let us know in the comments below.
