Malaysia’s got a new Predator and it can be yours for just under RM6,000

If you’ve been looking for a gaming laptop, you’re in luck because it’s gaming laptop season. Hot on the heels of HP’s Omen and a little after Lenovo’s Legion, Acer‘s throwing its hat in the ring with two brand new gaming laptops that sit firmly in the budget and midrange gaming category.

Meet the Predator Helios 300 and Nitro 5.

Acer Predator Helios 300

First thing’s first, we’ve got the Predator Helios 300 gaming laptop which first made an appearance at Acer’s Global Press Conference 2017. It’s priced at RM5,999 and for that money, you will be getting an Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor, 8GB of RAM, an NVIDIA GTX 1060 graphics card, a 256GB SSD and a 1TB HDD.

The Helios 300 also comes with Acer’s Aeroblade 3D fans that are supposed to maximise airflow so you can safely overclock your GPU. This laptop also comes with a 15.6″ IPS display that’s pushing a Full HD resolution of 1920×1080 pixels. As far as I/O is concerned, you will be getting a Gigabit Ethernet port, a USB 3.1 Type C port, a USB 3.0 port (that has power-off USB charging), two USB 2.0 ports, an SD card reader and an HDMI 2.0 connection.

If you want to learn more about this laptop, check out our full hands on with it and its bigger brother the Predator Triton 700.

Acer Nitro 5

If you want something even more affordable, then the Acer Nitro 5 might fit better within your budget. There are two variants to choose from and the more affordable one is priced at RM3,299. For the money, you will be getting an Intel Core i5-7300HQ processor, 4GB of RAM,  an NVIDIA GTX 1050 with 2GB of DDR5 memory, and a 1TB hard disk.

Want more power? For RM4,699, you can get the version with an Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor, an upgraded NVIDIA GTX 1050Ti and an additional 128GB SSD instead.

Both variants will feature a 15.6″ IPS display pushing 1920×1080 pixels (Full HD) and the same kind of plastic-that-looks-like-metal body. Keeping with the whole cooling theme, the Nitro 5 also comes with Acer’s CoolBoost technology that will spin your fans up to cool the system down at the touch of a button.

For I/O you will be getting a pretty decent selection that includes a USB Type-C port (3.1 Gen2), a USB 3.0 port, 2 USB 2.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet, an SD card reader and an HDMI 2.0 port.

Acer Day

Acer will also be carrying out their Acer Day campaign which will give the public a chance to win prizes (including brand new laptops) through daily online challenges. Customers who buy selected devices during this period will also be rewarded with stuff like Microsoft Office 365 software, a 1TB hard disk and shopping vouchers worth RM50.
