Motorola’s mid-range smartphones get a bigger screen and better cameras

The current Moto G5 series is getting a mid-cycle refresh with the introduction of its new Moto G5s and Moto G5s Plus. According to Motorola, these are considered special editions with notable improvements over its current Moto G5 and G5 Plus. They offer a larger screen, improved full metal unibody exterior along with upgraded cameras.

Moto G5s

The base Moto G5s now gets a larger 5.2″ Full HD display which is a slight upgrade from its original 5.0-incher on the Moto G5. The external body now gets a full metal exterior which is crafted from a single piece of aluminium. It now looks like a Moto M, which we feel is one of the best-built smartphones in its class.

The underlining hardware remains quite similar with a 1.4GHz Snapdragon 430 processor that’s mated to 3GB of RAM and it has 32GB of onboard storage that’s expandable via microSD up to 128GB. The cameras have been upgraded with the rear getting a 16MP f/2.0 PDAF camera while the front comes with a 5MP f/2.0 selfie shooter that comes with its own LED flashlight. Powering the Moto G5s is a slightly bigger 3,000mAh (Moto G5: 2,800mAh) battery and it charges via microUSB with support for Motorola’s TurboPower charging.

Moto G5s Plus

Moving up a notch to proper mid-range territory is the Moto G5s Plus. It retains the same Snapdragon 625 processor with 4GB RAM as the current Moto G5 Plus. It is available with storage options of either 32GB or 64GB onboard which is also expandable via microSD.

The screen is slightly bigger too, upgrading from a 5.2″ on the G5 Plus to a 5.5″ Full HD screen on the G5s Plus. Instead of a dual-pixel autofocus 12MP f/1.7 shooter, the G5s Plus gets a dual-camera lens which consists of dual 13MP f/2.0 shooters. Similar to Huawei’s dual-camera system, one of the cameras shoots in colour while the other shoots in monochrome. Over at the front, the G5s Plus gets an 8MP f/2.0 selfie camera with LED flash light assistance. The battery remains unchanged at 3,000mAh and it also supports TurboPower charging via microUSB.

Both the G5s and G5s Plus are not waterproof but they do come with water repellent nanocoating for protection against accidental spills. The Moto G5s is priced from 249 EUR (about RM1,262) while the G5s Plus is going for 299 EUR (about RM1,515). They will be available in selected countries worldwide beginning this month.
