Huawei Malaysia takes on OPPO and vivo with its new 20MP selfie smartphone

OPPO and vivo have dominated the selfie smartphone segment with its high-resolution 16MP and 20MP front shooters. Not wanting to be left behind, Huawei had recently introduced its new Nova 2 series that comes with a 20MP front camera.

This Huawei’s first attempt at making a serious selfie-centric device and it’s coming to Malaysia very soon.

Huawei Malaysia says they are introducing a new smartphone that aims to put the best selfie tool into your pocket. Apart from taking 20MP selfies, it also packs a dual-camera set up at the rear that claims to produce outstanding photos in low light.

For ease of shooting, the new Nova smartphones have a “raise hand motion” and a 2-second countdown timer built-in. For selfie touchups, it has 3D facial recognition plus Beauty 4.0 software enhancement that comes with automatic gender recognition. You can also add bokeh effects to your selfies with live preview.

To recap on the specs, the Nova 2 comes in a compact 5.0″ model along with a larger 5.5″ Nova 2 Plus model. Both push full HD resolution and are powered by a Kirin 659 processor with 4GB of RAM. In China, the Nova 2 comes with 64GB of storage while the plus model gets a larger 128GB capacity.

Like its P10 flagships, it also features a full metal unibody exterior but with an iPhone 7 inspired curved antenna band design which is a common trend among most selfie-centric phones from China. Over at the rear, it gets a 12MP primary camera for normal shots and a secondary 8MP lens for telephoto. Unlike the latest Huawei P10 series, the Nova 2 still features a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor.

The Nova 2 is juiced up by a 2,950mAh battery while the Nova 2 Plus gets a larger 3,340mAh unit. Out of the box, both runs on EMUI 5.1 that’s based on Android 7.0. In China, the Nova 2 is priced closely to its OPPO and vivo rivals which are slightly below the RM2,000 mark. Huawei Malaysia hasn’t revealed any launch dates for the Nova 2 but we reckon it should happen sometime end of this month or early August.
