Zeiss is coming back to Nokia smartphones

The phone game with their trio of Android smartphones, these new devices are missing one of the key features people have come to expect on Nokia branded phones: Zeiss optics.

Well, the German optical systems manufacturer is coming back to Nokia phones as they’ve just signed an exclusive partnership with HMD Global to “set new imaging standards within the smartphone industry”.

Nokia and Zeiss go way back, boasting a relationship that started almost a decade ago. Together, they’ve created some truly stunning smartphone camera experiences from stuff like the PureView 808 and the Lumia 1020 to name a few.

Of course, the stuff that made those smartphones such good camera phones was not only down to the Zeiss lenses but is also thanks to Nokia’s excellent image sampling technology. So, while Zeiss has returned, it still remains to be seen whether the Nokia phones featuring Zeiss lenses will be as good as the top dogs in the smartphone market right now.

No matter how much talk the companies may have about “redefining” or “standard setting”, the proof still lies very firmly in the pudding. And Nokia faces stiff competition especially considering the fact that phones like the HTC U11, Samsung Galaxy S8 and iPhone 7 Plus have shown just how good a smartphone’s camera can get.

Nevertheless, this rekindled partnership should only bode well for Nokia’s future endeavours into the smartphone world. If nothing else, the Zeiss branding still carries weight.

When can you expect to see Zeiss branded Nokia smartphones? We don’t know yet as HMD hasn’t revealed any roadmaps. However, there have been rumours hovering around that suggest Nokia’s next big device will be a flagship smartphone so maybe we’ll see Zeiss optics there.

Until then, your guess is as good as mine.

What do you guys think of Zeiss’ return to Nokia phones? Let me know in the comments below.
