The iPhone 7 Plus is no longer the top performing smartphone on Antutu

For those who care about benchmark figures, the iPhone has often come out on top despite having fewer cores and lesser RAM compared to its Android rivals. We’ve seen it on the iPhone 6s Plus and again with the iPhone 7/7 Plus.

After enjoying the #1 spot for the longest time, the iPhone 7 Plus has finally dethroned for the very first time on Antutu.

Based on Antutu’s latest top performance ranking list for May 2017, the iPhone 7 Plus is currently overtaken by a HTC U11 with an average score of over 180,000. This is HTC’s latest flagship device that runs on a Snapdragon 835 processor with up to 6GB of RAM. The Xiaomi Mi 6 has a similar set up but it scored lower than the iPhone 7 Plus with an average score of 172,494.

According to Antutu, the rankings are based on average scores with at least 1,000 data submissions. They also added that there’s a slight dip for iOS scores (Single-Core & UX) this round and this is likely caused by the iOS 10.3 update. The iPhone 7 Plus scored 177,320 in April 2017 while in May 2017 it got a lower 174,299.

If we look at the iOS list of devices, the iPad Pro 9.7 takes second place at 169,641 and this is followed by the iPhone 7 at 167,837. We expect the latest 2nd gen iPad Pro to top the charts in the following months as it gets a more powerful Apple A10X chip that boasts 30% more CPU performance and 40% faster GPU.

Drilling down to Android, we can see that the Galaxy S8/S8+ takes third (172,368) and forth (172,359) place followed by the OnePlus 3T (158,861) and the rest that are mostly running on Qualcomm’s older Snapdragon 821/820 processors.

At the end of the day, most of today’s flagship smartphones are pretty fast and it’s quite hard to distinguish them in real life usage. What matters more is the user experience and how it could run everything you throw at it instantly while having enough power to last a full day.
