Identity theft is a serious problem and you probably heard cases of scammers creating fake Facebook accounts with stolen profile pictures. To prevent imposters from using your face, Facebook is rolling out a new Profile Picture Guard which will make it harder for anyone to steal your picture.
With this new feature, you have more control over who can download or share your profile picture. Once enabled, a blue border will appear around the photo and Facebook will disable downloads and even screen capture when viewed on an Android smartphone. To make it less appealing to steal, you can apply a layer of textures that are inspired by Indian texture designs on top your profile photo.
Apparently, there are people who are reluctant to share their actual photos on Facebook as they are concerned that their faces could be used for unwanted purposes. Apart from fake social accounts, profile photos could be misused for fake profiles on shady dating or classified sites.
Of course, this isn’t a foolproof solution but it serves as a deterrent for potential imposters. At the moment, this Facebook profile picture guard is being rolled out in India and they hope to expand this to other countries soon.
