The honor 9 is a Huawei P10 in an all glass and metal body

The honor 9 compact flagship is finally official. It replaces last year’s honor 8 and this time, it almost identical to the Huawei P10 if you compare them spec by spec.

In terms of exterior, the honor 9 retains the same stunning Aurora glass appearance as before but it’s now curved at the back with the use of 3D glass. Like the new Huawei flagships, the honor 9’s fingerprint sensor is also moved to the front. Compared to the honor 8, the new device is slightly taller at 147.3mm (honor 8: 145.5mm) and heavier at 155g (honor 8: 153g) but it still has a similar 7.45mm thickness.

Over at the front, it retains a 5.15″ Full HD display and it runs on Huawei’s top of the line Kirin 960 processor that’s mated with a choice of 4GB or 6GB of RAM. Storage comes with a minimum 64GB along with a larger 128GB storage option. If you need more, it still accepts microSD expansion up to 256GB.

For optics, it gets a similar dual-camera set up as the Huawei P10 without the Leica branding. It consists of a 20MP (Monochrome) and a 12MP (RGB) camera with f/2.2 aperture. It’s also capable of 2X hybrid zoom like the Huawei P10/Mate 9. For selfies, it gets an 8MP f/2.0 front camera.

Powering the honor 9 is a 3,200mAh battery which is rated to last up to 2 days with standard use. Also included is a fast charger brick rated at 9V/2A and it charges via USB Type-C. For better audio enjoyment, it also comes with a HiFi chip and the honor 9 still retains a traditional 3.5mm headphone jack. Out of the box, it runs on EMUI 5.1 that’s based on Android 7.0 Nougat.

In China, the honor 9 base model with 4GB RAM + 64GB storage is going for 2,299CNY (about RM1,442) while the 6GB RAM + 64GB storage option is priced at 2,699CNY (about RM1,693). The top of the line honor 9 with 6GB RAM + 128GB storage is priced at 2,999CNY (about RM1,881).

It’s pretty obvious that the honor 9 is targeted directly at Xiaomi’s Mi 6 flagship which also comes with a compact 5.15″ Full HD display. As a comparison, the Mi 6 6GB RAM + 64GB storage model is priced at 2,499CNY (about RM1,567) while the 128GB storage option is going for 2,899CNY (about RM1,818).

At the moment, there’s no news of the honor 9’s availability for Malaysia. What we do know is its bigger phablet, the honor 8 Pro is coming to Malaysia very soon. That comes with a 5.7″ Quad HD display and it is powered by a larger 4,000mAh battery.
