HTC U Ultra is now RM400 off

In a move none of us saw coming, HTC has just made one of their high end flagships a whole lot better when it comes to value for money. Yep, there isn’t a typo in the title, HTC’s brand new U Ultra is now RM400 cheaper.

With this substantial price cut, HTC’s U Ultra will now retail for RM2,599 brand new. For that money, you’re getting a Snapdragon 821 quad-core processor, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. Besides that, you’re also getting a massive 5.7-inch Quad HD Super LCD5 display up front with a secondary ticker display that pushes 1040×160 pixels and can be used for shortcuts and notifications — think LG V20.

For photos, you get a 12-megapixel f/1.8 aperture camera with large 1.55 micron pixels while a 16MP selfie shooter sits in front for all your selfie needs.

Keeping the lights on is a 3,000 mAh battery with support for Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 technology. Capacity is a little small for a phone of this size as many of its phablet rivals clock in capacities of over 3,000 mAh.

This phone also represents HTC’s new move towards a shiny new body — and we mean shiny — ditching the glorious anodised aluminium unibodies that have become a staple in HTC’s flagships. It’s especially disappointing because HTC does metal better than anyone else.

Either way, the HTC U Ultra is suddenly much better value and can now compete with the more affordable end of the flagship smartphone spectrum — devices like the Huawei P10 (RM2,499) — and undercuts Sony’s brand new Xperia XZs by RM300. This makes the Sony flagship seem like a lot less value because that packs a lower resolution 5.2-inch Full HD display and an older Snapdragon 820 processor.

Still, the Sony has water resistance and that shiny new 19MP memory stacked MotionEye camera so you’ll have to decide for yourself if it’s worth the RM300 premium.

For those who have purchased the HTC U Ultra between 1st March 2017 to 13th April 2017, HTC Malaysia will be rewarding them with a HTC Re Camera and limited edition HTC premiums.

What do you guys think of the U Ultra now at its new price tag? Is it still too expensive? Let me know in the comments below!
