Samsung Galaxy S8 could shoot 1000fps slow-mo videos

The Samsung Galaxy S8‘s camera may not look much different from their current flagship smartphones but according to a new report, it looks like the upcoming flagship smartphone is capable of shooting 1000fps videos. That’s a thousand images in a second which is made possible by adding DRAM onto the camera sensor.

The 1000fps feature is quite similar to Sony’s new Motion Eye on the Xperia XZ Premium and XZs. To do so, Sony has developed a triple stack image sensor that has a DRAM layer in between. This helps to enable faster data readouts with minimal distortion. In terms of performance, it’s 4X faster than convention sensors.

While Samsung is known to use Sony camera sensors on their smartphones, the new Galaxy S8 is likely to use a different custom sensor. The Xperia XZ Premium and XZs uses a 19MP shooter (IMX400) while Samsung appears to be sticking to its dual-pixel 12MP camera similar its current Galaxy S7/S7 edge series. With the Xperia XZ Premium, the 960fps slow-mo feature only works for a couple of seconds with a max resolution of 720p and it’s quite tricky to trigger the slow-mo shot at the right moment. Hopefully, Samsung could do better with this one.

Over at the front, the Galaxy S8 is reported to be having an 8MP shooter that comes with auto-focus. Similar to the Galaxy Note7, there’s also a secondary 3.7MP RGB sensor which is dedicated for iris scanning. Since there’s no home button with an embedded fingerprint sensor, the new Galaxy S8 would rely heavily on iris and facial recognition for phone unlocking.

The Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+ will be revealed on 29 March 2017 in New York and the event will be streamed live on their website. Are you excited yet?
