Join the Legion with Lenovo’s new gaming lineup

Lenovo‘s finally outed their very own gaming brand and it’s called Legion. The first two gaming laptops to join this new roster are mid-range to entry-level products with VR-gaming in mind.

Previously sold under Lenovo’s Ideapad Y-series, the new branding brings Lenovo’s gaming roster in line with stuff like Acer’s Predator, HP’s Omen and Dell’s Alienware. It certainly sounds more interesting than an Ideapad. But the naming scheme is just what looks good on paper, what about the laptops?

Legion Y720

Well, the two devices are the Legion Y720 and the Legion Y520. Both of these laptops come with Intel 7th generation Kaby Lake processors with the Y720 getting either an i5-7300HQ or an i7-7700HQ chip, while the Y520 gets up to a Core i7 processor.

Both Legion laptops will also come with up to 16GB of memory with up to 512GB SSD or a 2TB HDD. On the display end, both laptops will get 15.6-inch displays with up to 4K resolution on the Y720 while the Y520 tops out at 1080p. In the graphics department, the Y720 will come with the VR-ready NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card, while the Y520 is packing an NVIDIA GeForce 1050 Ti instead.

It’s interesting that Lenovo decided to pair a 4K panel with a laptop whose graphics card tops out at a GTX 1060 because that card isn’t enough for 4K gaming, especially not on high settings. However, it should still perform well enough on 1080p and 2K resolutions.

Nevertheless, Lenovo did include an interesting selling point with the higher-end Y720 — Dolby Atmos audio technology. Lenovo is claiming that this is the first Dolby Atmos PC ever, but the bad news is that not many games support Dolby Atmos. Off the top of my head, I can only think of Overwatch, but I suppose this will be expanded in the future with new games.

Legion Y520

As far as design is concerned, the Y720 sports much edgier looks, with aggressive red accents and an angular design that lets the display appear float a little. The Y520, on the other hand, is a little more squared off and lacks the red fishnet-esque finish near the hinge.

Finally, we have the price. The Legion Y720 will have prices starting from USD1,399.99 (around RM6,300) while the entry-level Y520 will have its prices starting from USD899.99 (around RM4,050). The Y720 will be available beginning April 2017 while the Y520 will be available starting February 2017.
