Qualcomm announces 10nm Snapdragon 835 processor and faster Quick Charge 4

Preparing for next year’s flagship, Qualcomm has announced its new top of the line Snapdragon 835 processor. This would succeed its current Snapdragon 820/821 chips that are powering today’s flagship smartphones.

The new flagship processor will be based on Samsung’s 10nm FinFET process which is smaller than its current 14nm process on the Snapdragon 820/821 processor. By going down to 10nm, the new processor is 30% smaller in die size but it gains 27% in performance while cutting down power consumption by 40%. This should translate to improved battery life for next year’s flagships.

Also announced is a newer Quick Charge 4 which will be supported with the Snapdragon 835 processor. Not only it is faster but Qualcomm claims it will be cooler and more efficient than before. The new fast charging tech claims to be 20% faster than Quick Charge 3.0 while being up to 5-degree Celsius cooler. A quick 5-minute charge should give you 5 hours of battery life and you can charge from 0 to 50% charge in just 15 minutes. These results are based on Qualcomm’s testing on a 2,750mAh battery.

What’s more interesting is that Qualcomm will be complying with USB Type-C and USB Power Delivery (USB PD) standards. Hopefully, this means that any Quick Charge 4 certified power adapters will comply with Google’s call to standardise USB Type-C fast chargers.
