Grace UX coming to Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge with Nougat update?

Samsung‘s TouchWiz is often something you either love or you hate. I personally hate it, but with every update, Samsung does seem to try and make it a little more bearable for me. Its latest iteration — also known as the Grace UX — on the Galaxy Note7 is by far the most tolerable version yet. What’s more it also brings a whole bunch of useful Always On Display functions which I loved.

Now, it looks like Samsung already have plans ready to bring Grace to their Galaxy S7 and S7 edge smartphones. The bad news? It looks like you might have to wait until an Android Nougat update to get it.

According to GSMArena, a new rumour has surfaced that suggests Samsung will only be bringing the Grace UX update to the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge alongside the device’s Android 7.0 Nougat update. This comes following a report that Samsung was already testing Android Nougat builds on both their flagship smartphones a couple of days ago.

This does sound like good news, but it is a little disappointing to me considering the fact that Grace UX is built on top of Android Marshmallow in the Note7. I don’t care too much for the new look — because while it’s considerably more bearable than the old TouchWiz, it still looks kind of ugly — but I do care about the super useful Always On Display (AOD) features.

Stuff like letting you receive third-party app notifications on the AOD while also letting you double tap each notification to bring you into the app itself really completes the Note7’s experience. When I reviewed the S7 edge, the AOD felt like a gimmick (and an annoying one at that because it kept hopping around) without actually adding anything useful to the smartphone experience.

On the Note7, it was a whole lot more polished and a lot more useful. I never really had to switch on the display to keep up to date on what’s going on in my social media because a quick glance would tell me all I needed to know. If I had to describe it in a word, it would be that the new AOD on the Note7 felt complete. So much so that went back to the S7 edge and its AOD, it felt like I was using a beta product — something unfinished.

I’m sure that if you’ve used a Note7 before you would feel the same because it’s just universally more useful. Still at least it’s good to know that the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge will be getting this update at all. GSMArena expects the update to hit the Galaxy S7 devices some time in the next few months.
