iPhone 7/7 Plus packs larger batteries and more RAM

The latest iPhone 7 boasts not just better performance but also better battery life. Compared to the iPhone 6s, the new iPhone 7 gets 2 more hours while the iPhone 7 Plus pushes an hour extra vs the iPhone 6s Plus.

Apple doesn’t usually state the battery capacities of their devices but according to China’s TEENA certification, the iPhone 7 gets a 1,960mAh battery while the iPhone 7 Plus has a 2,900mAh capacity. As a comparison, the iPhone 6s had a 1,715mAh battery while the bigger 6s Plus is larger at 2,750mAh. That’s a 14% and 5% increase respectively for both phones. Despite its bigger battery, Apple still manages to shave additional 4-5 grams off compared to its previous models.

Every year, Apple introduces an upgraded chip for each new iPhone. The latest iPhone7 runs on an A10 Fusion chip that comes with quad-cores, with 2 being high performance and another 2 cores for power efficiency. In the past models, both iPhone sizes feature the same amount of RAM but this time, it appears that the iPhone 7 Plus has the upper hand with 3GB of RAM as spotted on Geekbench benchmarks. TEENA also lists the iPhone 7 Plus with 3GB of RAM as well while the iPhone 7 is weirdly shown to have just 4MB, which is likely to be a typo. Nevertheless, Apple isn’t shouting any processing advantages of the Plus model and the extra RAM might be there to complement its new dual-camera set up.

In terms of performance, Antutu has posted an insane benchmark score of 178,397 for the iPhone 7. It destroys everything else including 6GB RAM Android flagships that topped the charts a few months ago. It just goes to show that Apple really knows how to optimise both software and hardware without getting itself into a spec war.
